Whiskey Lullaby

Darcy O'Neil :: January 15, 2006 11:18 AM

A lullaby is defined as a soothing refrain or song to quiet children or lull them to sleep. As adults we may forgo the soothing refrain and head for a great, soothing, cocktail to relieve the days stresses. Whisky or whiskey, depending on where you are from, is a popular choice for a late night tipple. The whiskey lullaby is a soothing cocktail, with a base of whiskey, obviously, and rounded out with vanilla.

Whiskey is a great drink neat, up, or on the rocks, but sometimes mixing it up is a good thing. The Whiskey Lullaby will work with almost any kind of whiskey, including Scotch, Bourbon, Canadian and Irish. I generally prefer using a smooth blended whiskey like Canadian (Forty Creek Barrel Select) or Irish (Powers Irish Whiskey).

This drink is very similar to a Manhattan or Rob Roy, but the addition of Bols Vanilla liqueur smooths the whiskey out and amplifies the natural vanilla flavours in the whiskey. The vanilla liqueur also provides some sweetness to the Whiskey Lullaby.

Whiskey Lullaby

1½ oz Blended Whiskey
¾ oz Bols Vanilla Liqueur
½ oz Sweet Vermouth
Dash Bitters

Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake and strain into an old fashion glass, with fresh ice. Garnish with a cherry.

This Whisky Lullaby isn't suppose to be complex, just smooth and relaxing. A good before bed soother, just like a child's lullaby.

* There is a song called Whiskey Lullaby, which is performed by Brad Paisley.
