Kleiner Feigling Vodka

kleiner feiglingA couple of days ago I received a package at my front door, and in it was a sample of Kleiner Feigling fig flavoured vodka. I had previously not heard of this vodka, but the idea of fig vodka peaked my interest. Flavoured spirits are a staple in the cocktail world, but you can only be as creative as the flavours / ingredients you have. New flavours are a great way to make new creations and new creations are what fuel the cocktail renaissance.

Kleiner Feigling is from a company in Germany, that was established in 1892. They started producing Kleiner Feigling in 1992 and since then has reached annual world wide sales of 1,000,000 cases. This product is naturally flavoured and the name translates to "little coward."

fig.gifFigs are the fruit of ficus trees. The fig is believed to be indigenous to western Asia and has been distributed by man throughout the Mediterranean area. Figs are now grown world wide in tropical regions. They are small, soft, pear-shaped fruits with an intensely sweet flavour and rich, moist texture made crunchy by a multitude of tiny seeds. The fig has a unique fruity flavour with a mellow earthy flavour, sometimes said to be nutty. It is hard to describe a fresh fig. Fig newtons do no do justice to the flavour of the fig. If you haven't tried a fig, I would recommend you try one.

My first thought was it would probably taste like a fig newton in a bottle, which to my surprise, didn't remotely taste like that. And that's a good thing. After pouring a shot, my first impression was that it had peach and flower like overtones. There is no harsh alcohol in the nose, so the first impression was good. The one thing that should be noted is that Kleiner Feigling is a vodka with only 20% (40 proof) alcohol. This makes it an easy drinking spirit, without any alcohol burn. More on this later.

On tasting this spirit, it has a unique flavour that is slightly sweet with the flavour of apple and a slight earthiness, with a crisp acidic finish. Because of the low proof, it is very mellow, so diluting this with too much mix would cover up the flavours. Unlike a liqueur, this drink is not super concentrated in flavour or overly sweet, so it is enjoyable straight. I get the impression that this is the goal of this spirit.

Good matching mixes for Kleiner Feigling would be apple and cranberry juices. A Cosmopolitan made with this vodka would be an excellent drink

As I mentioned, this spirit is a 20% alcohol (40 proof) and many people may think that the alcohol content is important, but I disagree. As a bartender, this flavoured vodka is a great idea. At 20% alcohol, it would allow me to help control a persons alcohol consumption without being rude and over bearing. Cutting people off is difficult, and it is my least favourite part of being a bartender. Lower alcohol drinks can help slow people down while still having fun. It is even better if the product tastes good. People don't buy alcohol, they buy drinks and flavour. As a bartender, my number one duty is to make sure you have a great night, and that includes making sure you get home safe and your hangover isn't a three day affair. This product gives me one more tool to do that.

For example, if a group is having a great time and pounding back the drink, or I notice that someone isn't comfortable with drinking so much, or starting to get to "that point," I can recommend a round of Feigling vodka shots to slow them down. Half the alcohol consumption can double the time my guests are at the bar, and reduce intoxication. I have always used Bailey's as my "intervener" shot, to slow people down, now there is another good tasting option.

My overall opinion is that this is a nice smooth drink. It isn’t too sweet and is not overpowering with its flavour. It is best taken straight or served on ice.

We went to a tasting where there was a Chef from Chicago and he used Feigling with simple sugar creating a sauce that he soaked pound cake in. I should have asked how he made it - does anyone know the recipe?

any idea where i can get it in the uk?

I think you meant to say your interest was piqued, not peaked, though yours actually may have peaked, but it does not sound like it.

I am looking to purchase Feigling Fig Vodka, I live in suffolk county, new york and would like to know what stores in my area sell it. Thank you.

I also tasted the pound cake and would like the recipe.

I live in Dandridge Tennessee and would like to find out where I might purchase feigling vodka. I tried this at the beach in south carolina and have not been able to find here at home.

Thank you,

I am interested in sampling your product in Australia.
Do you have an agent or distributor here.
Please contact me via e mail if you are interested in establishing a contact here to distribute your product.

The fig flavored vodka in the bottle with the little eyes on it is actually called Kleiner Feigling vodka. You can get it at Sam's Liquor store in Illinois (search for Feigling vodka) for $17.99 per 750ml, but shipping is pricy due to weight, so you might want to order a few bottles at a time. Sam's website is:
www.samswine.com

The same is also available for $14.99 per 750ml at B-21 Liquors in Tarpon Springs, FL (727) 937-5049 and can be ordered on line thru B-21 by searching for Kleiner Feigling vodka at:
www.b-21.com

I called B-21 and they had over 50 bottles in stock. Hope this helps. My order is in.

I had my very first Feigling many years ago when I lived on Long Island, a friend of mine brought it back with him from Germany and I LOVED IT! I then moved to Florida and had every liquor store I ever went into carry it. Now I live upstate New York and can't find it anywhere. My local liquor store owner was able to find me 3 bottles in another store and I bought all 3 of them... I'm now almost out again and need to know where I can purchase more of it... why is it so hard to find????????

Hi Guy's,

Here is the answer to your questions. I have the bottles!!! I am a German Girl who moved to St. Maarten (Caribbean) about 3 years ago. I just came back from Germany with a Contract from the Kleiner Feiglin Company what made me the only distributor for that product in the Caribbean. So if you can't find Kleiner Feigling where are you living just contact me and I would be pleased to take your order and send it to you. Just contact me via kleinerfeiglingsxm11@earthlink.net or call me on my cellphones 011-599-5810775 or 011-599-5245222 from the States. And then we will find a way that you get Kleiner Feigling.

All the best,
Jacky Knorr

I live in Nevada in the Reno/Sparks area and no one is this god-forsaken state has ever heard of this delightful vodka.
Is there a location that carries it in Northern Nevada. We are 12 hours drive time from Las Vegas so please do not suggest Las Vegas.
If there is no one, how do I get it shipped here?

guess you'd have to import it from source, they are the only one supplier in the usa

hey??would love to know where i could get Kleiner Feigling in Ireland or even the UK???Or anywhere that would take orders?

Sounds Interesting! Any idea how to get this sample?

And as always, you can simply google "kleiner feigling" and it will pop up a bunch of sites.

This vodka is simply incredible. I got hooked on it (like many others) in Germany, and haven't had it for a very long time.

I, like others, have travelled to Germany and fallen in love with Kleiner Feigling. I have some in my refrigerator that I've been milking since the summer of 2006 when I went back to Germany for the World Cup. I never knew that it was even available in the States, so I am excited and motivated to search for a nearby distributor. Anyone know any in Ohio?

Have been trying to find Feigling and having no such luck. We even tried to call the distributor currently listed on the website. He said he'd get back to us and two months later we still haven't heard from him.

Anybody know where it can be purchased in the Nassau/Suffolk, NY area? We used to bring it back from Florida, but the last trip down, we couldn't get it there either.
