Website Update: Cocktail Database

The redesign of the site has been mostly completed, there are still a few touch ups here and there. The next part is adding additional functionality and information to the site. The first thing I’ll be rolling out is a cocktail database. Now I know what you are thinking; “How many more web sites do we need with ten thousand recipes and two hundred for a Sex on the Beach!”. Well, it isn’t going to be the worlds most comprehensive database, more like a historically accurate database with modifications for modernism. Also, I’ll be adding pages for beer and wine I try, basically my tasting notes will be online, but I’ll still be writing blog posts about the stuff I try. Shortly afterward I’ll be adding a search feature and whatever else I can think of doing.

The cocktail database is first up and many of the recipes will reflect what most bars have to work within, a “standard pour”, i.e. no 5oz rum Tiki drinks, even though Tiki drinks may be included. The idea of 5 ounces of alcohol in a single drink is a little mind boggling and in many places would be illegal to serve. In this cocktail database the drinks will be scaled down so that you can serve them without breaking the law. Other cocktails will be included either, because I personally like them or because they are, or should be, popular. There will be no multiple versions of cocktails (e.g. Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster #2, #3 and #4), except for historical ones like the Diablo or Hurricane cocktail. I don’t think I’m going to be accepting public submissions for drinks, just because the quality tends to be low. For example, check out these gems:

Sip and Get Funky

1 oz Gin
3 oz Beer
½ oz Grenadine
½ oz 7-Up

Instructions: Mix ingredients and slam it.

A drink with sip in the name but slamming it is the proper method of drinking?

1 shot Stoli Lemon vodka
1 shot Stoli Strawberry vodka
1 shot Stoli Orange vodka
1 shot Stoli Raspberry vodka
1 shot Amaretto
Fill 1/2 Sour mix
Fill 1/2 Cranberry juice
Top with Grenadine

¼ oz Rumple Minze
¼ oz Jägermeister
¼ oz Gold tequila (Jose Cuervo)
¼ oz Bacardi 151 proof rum

Why is it that every cocktail that has some sexual content in the name is a “let’s get wasted” type drink or something really scary. Anyway, if it’s remotely like these drinks, it won’t be included.

Currently I’m working on getting better photographs for the site. My camera is fine for the job, but I need better lighting, so I’m thinking about building something. I’m not a fan of the hot spots caused by camera flashes, so a light box is in order.
