Imbibers One Hundred

Darcy O'Neil :: November 13, 2008 11:23 PM

While I was reading an article, by Stephen Beaumont, he linked to the "Omnivores 100", which is a list of 100 foods the author of Very Good Taste thinks you should try at least once in your lifetime. Well, I thought it was such a good idea that I made one for "Imbibers". This list isn't all encompassing, nor is it a "good stuff only" list. There are a few things that may make you pause. In most cases the list is not brand specific, but for certain things it is, because of the world wide popularity. Feel free to participate, or not, but it is a good exercise to see what you are missing in life.

Remember, this is just a list of things you should try, not the "best of the world" list. The list is about contrast and variation of flavour. I’m sure a few scotch addict’s, vodkaphiles and beeroholics will recommend a particular brand, but in most cases, this list is style specific, instead of brand specific. But please feel free to make recommendations.

Instructions:

1) Copy this list into your blog, with instructions.
2) Bold all the drinks you’ve imbibed.
3) Cross out any items that you won’t touch
4) Post a comment here and  link to your results.

OR

If you don’t have a blog, just count the ones you’ve tried and post the number in the comments section.

FAQ

1. Buckley's is a Canadian cough syrup made with ammonium carbonate, which most Canadian's are familiar with. The products tag line was "It tastes like $#%*, but it works." Is it a drink? Well, it's more like a shooter, but it was put in the list for the humour value.

2. Wine of Pines is pineapple wine and was described by early explorers as "the drink of the gods". Consider it the "fruit wine" portion of the list.

This is a great list, i'm on 44 so far, which isn't too bad, but shows what i've got to do, better get to work then...

OK, where can I get this Buckeley's Cough Syrup? It's the only thing standing between me and a perfect 100, damnit!

Buckley's is a Canadian treat. The advertising goes like this "It tastes like $#!+ but it works". Most Canadian's are familiar with the flavour.

If you want to substitute, try baker's ammonia (ammonium carbonate) or sometimes referred to as "smelling salts". Mix a wee tiny amount in water, and "enjoy".

The reality is that it does taste like shit, but really works well to kill a nagging cough.

Here's my list:

Scofflaw's Den

73 out of a 100.

Show off Phil! I'm at 69... not too bad I feel considering I'm still quite young. Can't say I'm too eager to try some of them though - Buckley's included.

My list is up at Two at the Most. That 74 will be up to 75 this weekend, when I bust out the Westvletern that my friend gave me.

Only 48...but not too shabby when you consider I've only been of legal drinking age for 2 years...

http://drinksforthehouse.blogspot.com

Airag's a tad rough, though I know plenty who do enjoy...

75/100 here...but I feel ashamed that I've never heard of some of these.

Buckley's Cough Syrup?

Is that some Canadian thing?

Plus, I can't believe you haven't had Fernet Branca, yet!

WTF?

Ya, Buckley's is the "Canadian content" for the list. Most Canucks will know exactly what I'm talking about.

As for the Fernet Branca, the LCBO just started carrying it again, so I'll be knocking that off my list soon.

Looks like I'm at 81. 19 more to go...although J-Mo seems to wonder about the inclusion of the cough syrup...

Oh yeah, also "Wine of Pines"?

No idea, there, either.

Do you mean Retsina?

What, no sense of humour? Maybe I should add one more and then give out bonus markets for Buckley's.

hmmm no Elderflower Liquor....blasphemy. The trend gods will strike.

Wine of Pines was described by early explorers as the "drink of the gods". It is actually pineapple wine, or a mixture of fermented pineapple juice and fresh pressed pineapple juice (early days). It is still widely available. Consider this the "fruit wine" portion of the list.

Here ya go over at the Underhill-lounge:

erik_flannestad's Imbiber's 100

Obviously, I've been drinking waaay too much...

Re: Wine of the Pines

Ah, Tepache!

Actually, Daniel at the Teardrop Lounge in Portland had some house made Tepache one of the times I was up to visit. Another to cross off!

65/100 - and I thought I'd done pretty well. I can be fairly certain that my mom's gonna be disappointed in me.

Hey, why Buckley's cough syrup and not Clamato juice, surely much more suitable as a Canadian entry (77/100)

Here's mine. Forgot to add (original flavor) Nyquil. And malzbier. And Sanbitter. Crap.

I hope you mean Czech Budwieser.

Nope. The list isn't the best things to try, just things you should try, good or bad, bland or bold. Contrast my friend. "Without darkness there would be no light"

And White Dog should be on there too, along with Ting and aztec cocoa rather than hot chocolate

Aztec cocoa is #47 - Brewed Choclate (Xocolatl)

You're right, sorry my bad. (78/100)

Does #96 Screech refer to Newfoundland Screech Rum?

Yes, but there is also New England Screech. Most places along the north east have some history of Screech, but the name "screech" does come from Newfoundland. Bonus point for anyone who has tried the non-commercial screech aka the real thing

Ok, one last one I couldn't figure out for sure, #27 Chicory is that chicory coffee? that makes you blind?

I'm at 59 of 100. I think I'll take my time getting to certain items on the list, although Buckleys is far to recent a memory for me.

That's the stuff. But there is no scientific evidence about going blind. But it does help flush the digestive track of parasites, so after your trip to Mongolia, for some Airag, you can come back and have some chicory. Two birds with one stone.

I'm 45 out of 100. Here's the link to my blog post

Oh Darcy! you should have added TING!

.......and JWray overproof!......

great list - i can't believe that I hit 88 (and if you let Wine of Pines refer to any fruit wine, i'm at 89). click on my name for a link to my post.

I've now checked out all these items on wikipedia, made myself a molasses and milk and gone out and grabbed a couple of other things, I'm now proud to say I'm at 82/100. (assuming cerveza is just a corona or sol)

I agree with ..crushedice.. Wray & Nephew, Ting are missing along with pressed apple juice, clamato juice, carrot juice, poteen, pastis & mineral water, ..... I'll stop now before I get to 150

Darcy, thank you, most, if not all of these have given me a reminder of a pleasant occasion or memory, I learnt quite a bit and its been great fun and I still have 18 left to go.

Wray & Nephew is a great rum, but drinking it straight is more on the bad side of the equation, in a cocktail it would be perfect hence the original Mai Tai (#21) which used W&N.

Fresh pressed apple juice is #31 on the list (apple cider). Pastis, is basically absinthe, or a weak substitute for absinthe. Clamato, is a possibility, but for many years it was a Canadian thing with Caesars. Carrot juice, I don't think I'm missing much.

Glad you enjoyed the list

Hey Darcy, the original Mai Tai used the 17 year old JWray and nephew, dark rum. I was talking about the JWray and Nephew overproof which drunk straight is not to recommend but with Ting is something everyone really should try at least once.

BTW, its hard to try the real original Mai Tai unless you happen to know someone who has some of that rum left. But i count a good rum pairing like Appleton extra and St James hors d`age as a "original" Mai Tai - in a way...

I think I'm well on my way to death....

Here's my list. I thought 52 was good, until I read around!

Darcy, I know I said I wouldn't add any more, however my homework on the Screech entry reminded me of something but I couldn't quite place, It occured to me earlier today;

Check THIS out, http://www.sourtoecocktailclub.com/

this should definitely be on the list.

Couple suggestions:

Batavia Arrack and Moonshine (or some form of unaged whisk(e)y).

Erik; unaged whiskey in the U.S. is 'white dog', in Scotland; 'new make spirit' and both are very different, white dog is an experience, probably closest to Georgia Moon corn whisky, new make scotch however is amazing, so much flavour, if they were allowed to bottle it, I would buy it as is (Especially seeing as my bottle of Glenmo new make has just run out).

I'm up to 79, maybe 81 counting ones I'm not totally sure of. Fun list!
http://www.jacobgrier.com/blog/archives/1494.html

52 out of 100. The sad thing is my list is defined more by that's off it that what's on...

no original Mai Tai, no Zombie, no Negroni.

At least I have my Bud and bourbon.

http://cocktailrevolution.wordpress.com/2008/11/17/memes-galore-the-imbibers-100/

I counted 81 out of 100. A pretty well judged list, I'd say, though perhaps a bit shy on the wine entries. No representative Burgundy? And why Sauternes if you've also got Chateau d'Yquem, the king of the Sauternes? Still, a fine, fine entry.

Here's my list. 75/100 isn't too bad. Should ginger ale/beer (especially Blenheim's) make the list?

The Chateau d'Yquem and Sauternes is an exercise in contrast. If something is the king, you should at least understand why. Same reason I have Bud on the list.

I see. One of the things on the list that I haven't had is Red Bull. I think I'm going to keep it that way!

Great post as always.

I am at 76 down 24 to go.

Hmm... 78. Not bad I guess. At least for someone living in Sweden. Kind of hard to find Screech or Two Buck Chuck on this side of the pond... same goes for Pulque, Chicha, and Wine of Pines...

70 out of 100 ain't too bad, especially when you are located in Norway.

I would add:

English cask ale

Imperial Pale Ale

Cod liver oil

Czech Pilsener

Sahti (Finnish traditional beer)

Icelandic Brennivin (also known as Black Death…..)

I guess I'll play "low man on the totem pole" with my measly 33. But if you add in my score from the Very Good Taste list then my score is 68, which is... still pretty low...

Well I thought I am better - 85 / 100!

You check those out on my www.opinionated-alchemist.com

Cheers!

Dominik MJ

I've got a passing grade...barely! 56/100
http://spiritmeaway.com/?p=538

Sorry to be a pedant, but can you add another N to Guinness ;)

I'm afraid to tot up my numbers in case I'm shamed of how many or how few I've had :D

Man, compared to a lot of you guys I am way behind. Only 31 on my list include three I will not try. You can see mine here. http://www.ew3.us/?p=489
Also I think two that should be on this list is Sam Adams Utopia and Glühwein.

Cerveza is Spanish for beer. Whaddya mean? Gringo-fare like Corona with a lime inserted into it?

Over halfway there...55/100
grillandbarrel.com

Thanks for the fun. Here's my list, 47/100 guess I have some drinking to do!

http://www.legalbeer.com/2008/11/imbibers-one-hundred

I feel justified only getting 67 of 100. I'm only 23 and liver willing I will finish this list.

http://afifthofvapor.com/blog/imbibers-one-hundred/

Delightful, only at about 58/100 so there is much to be done. Ah, beautiful inspiration. Love it.

http://prettyandfabulous.com/?p=109

There is my list- much love. xx

59/100.... Fun list

What, no kvass or MalÖrt? :-)

Okay, I'm a bit late to the game, but here's my go at it, a respectable 88 out of 100:

http://looka.me/archive/2008-11.html#imbibers100

I think I'd go for the fermented horse milk rather than touch Red Bull again -- I had a taste once just to see, and ewww -- and although I'm not too keen on the idea of coffee made from beans that have been pooped out of a weasel, Wes chimes in that he'd be up for it.

Hey Chuck, Wes is a smart man, you should listen to him. You did give me a good idea though, this would make a good Tales session. Pick the top 10, or so, really difficult / rare / odd drinks and get everyone to try so they can complete their list.

That, or we should just get a pound of Kopi Luwak for Tales and have it in the "official" bloggers suite.

Nice list but I'm suprised unicum and blenheims ginger ale isn't on the this.

I got an ok 72 - but I am going to work for a higher score!

http://www.beeratjoes.com/?p=128

53/100 - barely half, this would be an F if we were using the academic school grading system - which is not passing at all!
i've got some work to do, but thank you for this, it gives me an idea of at least where to start.

http://nopostagerequired.wordpress.com/2008/12/17/imbibers-100/

what about adding rooibus tea? the red black tea is one of my favorite liquids.

I only got 15/100. I drank too less.

rooibus tea is one of my favorites as well, try adding it

Well, I see I have some edges to fill in, but I'm pleased with my 62/100 given that I'm not a huge beer or wine drinker.
