Stoughton Bitters

Ingredients
10 L Water
10 Liters Whiskey
4 oz Gentian-root
4 oz Columbo
4 oz Orange peel
4 oz Quassia
4 oz Chamomile Flowers
1 lb Burnt Sugar

Instructions:
Infuse the whole of the ingredients in the whiskey for eight days. All solid substances, viz. roots, plants, &c., &c., should be well bruised or mashed before adding to the spirit. Color the above bitters with eight ounces of bruised alkanet-root. After the mass has digested for eight days, strain through a filtering or muslin bag.

History
It seems there are a multitude of recipes for Stoughton's Bitters. There doesn't even seem to be a common thread in the recipes. This is also one of the oldest bitters used in cocktails, and may have been what was used in the original cocktail.
