Label Text
Scotch Whisky made for and inspired by Canada. When the LCBO asked me to create a special whisky for them, I looked to distilling in Canada for inspiration.

The Compass Box house style is typically marked by a purity of flavour and by a richness, sweetness and softness that comes from whiskies aged only in American oak ex-Bourbon casks or new European oak. In maintaining this style, we have never used whiskies aged in casks that once hled wine. Until now.

The Magic Cask in "Magic Cask"

Given the "9.0.9 Regulation" for making Canadian whisky, I felt that a whisky for Canada was the right place for use to break with our tradition and use whisky aged in a former wine cask.

The Magic Cask in "Magic Cask" is a seductive 17 year-old Linkwood that finished the last year of its life in an outstanding quality Madeira barrique. The rich, fruity, candied flavours of the Linkwood are matched perfectly with the malty ethereal flavours of a 14 year old malt distilled in the northern Highland village of Brora. The marriage is a beautiful one: rich, harmonious and very long. A luxurious dram.

Enjoy this limited edition, first-of-its-kind Compass Box Whisky.

Tasting Notes

Colour:
Golden orange colour with a viscous appearance. Small amount

Aroma:
Sweet, floral and smoky with hints of tobacco, like a nice cigar, and sherry / Madeira. No alcohol harshness

Palate:
Very smooth, oily with a nice floral sweetness and a peat finish. Slightly spicy and astringent. Not a lot of oak, but you can definitely taste the Madeira and its sweetness. Good lingering peat finish.

Notes:
When it comes to adding a few drops of water to open up this whisky, don't. In two separate tastings the water made the Magic Cask a little rougher around the corners and brought out the alcohol. Straight out of the bottle the Magic Cask is beautifully smooth and the intended flavours are present without any harshness.

Serving Suggestions :
Great straight or on the rocks. If you want a really sweet Rusty Nail, you might try the Magic Cask as your Scotch.
