Product Description
Poteen is basically Irish moonshine made from barley. It comes in a number of proofs, including 101, 120, 140 and I believe 180 proof. This is a legal version sold around the world, but originally poteen was made barns and hidden areas around Ireland.
Label Text
Poitin, or Poteen has been brewed as Irish strong moonshine for several centuries. Knockeen Hills Poteen is a triple distilled grain spirit with a strong, smooth, delicate flavour. Drunk neat, on the rocks, or with mixers the pleasant after taste lingers on.
Butler's Irish book published in 1660 claimed that "It enlightened ye heart, cast of melancholy, kept back old age and breaketh ye wind".Irish folklore maintains those properties still exist today.
Tasting Notes
Colour:
Water white
Aroma:
Fruity with aromas of ripe fruit like bananas, apple and pear.
Palate:
Hot with a distinct malt flavour and subtle fruit flavours on the finish. The flavour lingers for a while.
Notes:
The fruit flavours in this version come from natural flavours that are added, so it isn't truly a pure moonshine. It's not bad, but you might find the flavour a little light. The fruit flavours are only obvious on the nose. They are present on the palate, but not in a bold way.
Serving Suggestions :
This is one of those spirits that doesn't have defined area of expertise. You could use it in place of vodka, but I find that the high proof works better for mixing with sweeter spirits (ice wine) while still maintaining a reasonable proof.
