This is a classic strong / overproof rum. In the early days of rum production, rum was taken straight off the still and made into grog or other drinks. However, as we entered the 20th century, alcohol proof was reduced and most rums come in at 40% ABV. But Wray & Nephew Overproof rum is a throw back to the original rums.

Tasting Notes

Colour:
Water white / clear

Aroma:
Strong aroma of fruits and molasses. The aroma is the best part of this rum. It is fragrant and does not smell harsh at all. This is what a good white rum should smell like.

Palate:
Strong alcohol, obviously, but if you get past that, there is a pleasant fruitiness. The finish is long, a hot and rum like. Diluted it is extremely pleasant and is a great base spirit from tiki style cocktails.

Notes:
Obviously Wray & Nephew Overproof isn't a straight sipper, unless you are truly hardcore. But, the bounty of aromas and flavours that lurk in the bottle are perfectly suited for cocktails and mixed drinks. I really enjoy this rum as a way to bring a true rum flavour to cocktails. Most modern white rums lean towards the "sugar cane vodka" for the mass market appeal.

Serving Suggestions :
Probably best used in swizzle style drinks with lots of ice. It makes a good "float" on tiki style drinks. Don't use if for shooters, that's just retarded.
