Canadian whisky has been around for a very long time and is the number one spirit imported into the United States. It currently accounts for 11.5% of spirit consumption in the US and only trails behind vodka for market share. The key reason for this is the smooth nature of Canadian whisky. For most people, drinking is a casual affair, and Canadian whisky is a casual whisky. However, there is more to this spirit than meets the eye.
Here are the basics: Canadian whisky must be aged for at least three years, most are aged 6 to 8 years (Canadian Club, Seagram’s VO) and double distilled. The final product is almost always a blended whisky which produces a more consistent product. The Canadian government does not place any restrictions on the mash bill, blending or distillation. They leave it to the expertise of the master blender, which is a good thing. Like Scotch, most Canadian whisky’s are aged in used bourbon or sherry casks.
One common rumour is that Canadian whisky is blended with “unaged neutral grain spirits”. This is false. The reality is that some of the mash is distilled to a very high proof, effectively becoming a neutral grain spirit. However, it still must be aged for at least three years. This is not necessarily a bad thing since a blender requires many whisky types to choose from when making their final product.
American whiskey like Seagrams7 Crown are blended whiskey’s that can use unaged neutral grain spirit for up to 80% of the product! The reason for this was that after the repeal of prohibition, there was a large vacuum for spirits that needed to be filled. Ramping up production would take some time and using neutral grain spirits and a small amount of whiskey was the fastest way to market for many US whiskey producers. Seagrams “7” Crown is a 2-year-old American blended whiskey, and should not be confused with Crown Royal, which is a 10-year-old Canadian whisky.
Most exported to the US is “light” Canadian Whisky. The product is manufactured in Canada for the American palette. The number one selling whisky is Canadian Mist, which is an extremely light Canadian whisky made from corn (maize). It also has a small amount of natural flavouring added. Other exported whiskies include Black Velvet, Windsor Canadian, Canadian Hunter, Lord Calvert and Rich & Rare. Many of these whiskies are not marketed in Canada surprisingly.
On a side note, the Canadian Hunter whisky label is probably the reason it is not sold in Canada. I have no idea what huskies and an Inuit hunter have anything to do with whisky.
There is a large category of aged Canadian whiskies that are sold in Canada that are aged and have outstanding quality. Some of these include:
List of Canadian Whiskies
Gibsons Finest (18 Year Old)
Gibsons Finest (12 Year Old)
Wiser’s Very Old (18 Year Old)
Corby’s Lot 40 Pot Still
Corby’s Pike Creek Double Barreled
Corby’s Royal Reserve
Canadian Club founders Blend
Canadian Club (20 Year Old)
Canadian Club (15 Year Old)
Crown Royal
Danfields Private Reserve
Forty Creek Barrel Select
Alberta Premium 100% Rye
Alberta Springs
Seagram’s VO
Like all spirit categories, you will find different grades of quality. Canadian whiskies often get a bad rap as not being complex, but I think that reflects that Canadian nature. Our whiskies are mellow, relaxed and created to be enjoyed with friends and family in a casual environment. However, there are a few expressions of Canadian whisky that would make any connoisseur happy.
In the future, there will be more discussion of whisky spirits in general, and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

I have a 1970 Imported Canadian CLub Whiskey 1 Liter, the 6 Year Aged Bottle. Just wondering how much it is worth and how good the whiskey would taste today? Thanks for any information you can give.
I have a bottle of Black velvet whiskey, circa 1977, unopened and still has original packaging with it. Any idea how much it would be worth or where I could find out?
Answer: It wouldn’t be worth very much since whisky does not age in the bottle. Plus Canadian whiskies don’t garner much attention from collectors.
I have a bottle of Wiser’s oldest canadian whisky bottled in 1959 and is an 18 year old what is this worth?
Anyone know of a TV add for Black Velvet from the 1970s? Very cool commercial, full or dark ethereal music and darkened skies, and imposssible to find it seems. Apparently Barton, who owns the Black Velvet product (and is actually American I believe) does not keep historical records, but some has got to know it. Youtube doesn’t have it, and neither does Google. Maybe it just doesn’t exist anymore. I actually saw the commercial re-broadcast about 4 or 5 years ago I think. Kind of mysterious.

The value of this???
MERCI
The value of old bottles of Crown Royal (1950’s to 1654) seems to be about $70 if you can find a buyer. Vintage Canadian whiskies are not in high demand because they are blended and supposedly don’t change from one year to another. Also, they are safe to drink.
I just found a sealed 1978 bottle of canadian club whiskey at my 92 year old grandpa’s house. it is the 6 year old aged bottle. it’s 1 liter. i was just wondering if it was worth anything today and if it would taste very good.

Is my bottle worth anything? It also has a Pump thing on the lid…
All these 60s and 70s Canadian Club bottles sell for about $30 a quart including shipping. I’d be willing to pay up to $25 on paypal for unopened bottles and I’d pay shipping. I thought they would be worth more myself until I looked into it. They taste damn good though. If I were you I’d just drink it. Aged whiskey is great. If you wanna sell ’em get back to me soon cuz I have been buying gallons of whiskey lately. Soon enough I’ll run out of room for whiskey and cigars. [email protected] … Have fun drinking..
And you… Roy Krapes.. Your bottle is worth 100+.. Don’t clean it up.. It’s more likely that a serious collector would want a 1914 bottle than a drinker… Atleast the collector would pay more.. E-mail me and I’ll get back to you with a more defined value [email protected]. BTW, I don’t wan’t it. After about 50-60 years things dont get much better. At that point there is a deacent amount of evaporation of alcohol especially if the bottle was stored on its side.. Adios.
Sorry.. One more thing people… If you drink this whiskey. DRINK IT STRAIGHT!!! Wasting good aged alcohol in mixed drinks is a crime that should be punished by de..dea.. wait no.. AA.. Thats Alcohol Abusers..
HI,
I HAVE A BOOTLE OF 1971 ORDER OF MERIT SEALED WITH BOX AND BAG. HOW MUCH WOULD THIS BE WORTH.

I just came into possession of an unopened bottle of 1966 Canadian Club. All seals intact. Can you tell me what it is worth?
I have in my possession 5 bottles of Canadian Club Whisky from 1920, that’s right, during prohibition. The bottom of the label says “BEWARE OF COUNTERFEITS”. These are almost completely full. A prior bottle did have some evaporation and it was consumed by myself and friends. It was fantastic, just on the rocks. Any idea of what they might be worth or whether CC itself would like them back? Thanks
I have a bottle of Canaian Club 1947 never opened how much is it worth

I am trying to find some information about a Gooderham & Worts 1832 Decanter commemorating there 125 anniversary. It is in a presentation box with a original note and unbroken
1945 “tax” stamp. It states that the contents are blended from 35 year old reserves and none less than 10 years old. Minimum of 72 year old spirits, would it be worth a appraisal? or should I simpily taste a very old whiskey. Thank you in advance.
Hi Dave and Kevin. Would you happen to have a photo of the CN Tower bottles?
I have a bottle of Canadian club 1965 perfect condition sealed bottle whats the value and who wants to buy it?
I have an old bottle of wiser’s deluxe 10 year old from 1976 . is it worth anything or would it be better to consume ?
I’ve recently acquired a few bottles of Canadian Club Whiskey (unopened) from 1974-1976 and I was wondering what the value is of these bottles. I’m hoping I didn’t pay too much. I’ve tasted one of the ’74 bottles and it was quite smooth, but then again I’m quite a novice at this and I don’t know what exactly I should be looking for in a good aged whiskey.
As a side bar, I would also like to buy and store some newer bottles of whiskey for a later date (maybe 20 years from now when my son is getting married or graduating college) and I was wondering if you could recommend a whiskey that would age better than another. Should I go Irish, Scottish, Canadian or some other?
I have a bottle of Canadian Club, 1973, 6 year old, I think it is a gallon and it has a pump with it. Can you tell me what it is worth?
I am wondering if they still make Lord Calvert Canadian Whiskey and if so where do I find the company. I have searched for their headquarters. Nothing on the web as far as contact to their office.
Thanks.

Dude, do you ever actually answer any of the questions?
Chuck,
When I can find a price or reference to these products I do give answers. A lot of the time I just email them because the answers are different for each case. For the most part Canadian whiskies have very little value on the vintage whisky market. My general advice is to just enjoy them because they don’t go bad.

hey i have a bottle of 1975 canadian whisky in the shape of the CN tower. i was just wondering if you knew how muck it was worth. it was given as a gift a while ago. thanks Brandi
Wow! It looks as though everyone’s grandparents saved bottles of whiskey. I have a sealed Canadian Masterpiece 1956 in the red box. Too bad they so carefully saved them,as they are apparently not a sought after item. Sounds as if we all need to drink up.
For Xmas Ireceived a 40 year old bottle of Crown Royal. As I was drinking it, I contacted Crown Royal just to see the worth and why the difference in taste. They told me that the age does not improve the taste when it is stored in a bottle. Not true. I am an avid Crown drinker, and this was the smoothest Crown that I have ever drank. Also, can you tell me why it had a tinge of sweetness to it? If you know anyone that has an unopened bottle of that age, I would like to buy it.
WHEN I WAS 21 YRS. OLD, I WAS GIVE A 4/5 QUART OF CANADIAN MASTERPIECE WITH A SEAL OF 1962. SO WHEN I HAVE MY FRIST SON, I WOULD OPEN IT. BUT THE GIRL I WAS GOING TO MARRY, DIE, 3 MONTHS BEFORE WEDDING. WHAT SHALL I DO WITH IT NOW?
I have a bottle of Canadain Club whiskey distilled in 1927 and bottled in 1933..Still sealed in excellent condition. Bottled in Walkervill Ont Canada..Is it worth a Sotheby’s auction….

I was just given a bottle of Canadian Club Gate Bottle 1920 Limited Edition with the original seal in place. It was found in the basement of a friend’s house. Can anyone tell me about this? Is it really from 1920.
To those of you who may have found old bottles of whiskey and/or wine, I am interested in purchasing them. I’ve got a vast collection of Canadian whiskeys, and I’m always willing to collect more (I am Canadian, and I live in Kitchener, right next to Waterloo where most of these were made).
I can’t guarantee you the amount you are probably expecting for them, as stated previously whiskey does not age, nor does Canadian whiskey garner a good return on the market.
My email is kael.madsen(at)gmail(dot)com
Thanks for reading, and I’m looking forward to any and all inquiries.

I have a bottle of Canadian Schenley Whiskey that displays the front label as Order of Merit and aged 15 years. The seal is unbroken and says 1957 on it. The back label says it was placed in casks in August 1957 and bottle in August 1972. Is in perfect new condition. Is this something that would be of interest to a collector? Does it hold any real value or, is it soemthing I should just drink?
I have two 1972 bottles of Candian Club whiskey. How much would they be worth?

I have an unopened “tax stamped 1955 (+ Minnesota tax stamp)” of Canadian ‘Masterpiece’ by Calvert — 80 proof…in a red presentation hard case, brass hindged with a yellow bedliner. Does anyone know what the bottled date of this item is? It was the year I graduated and thought it would be a nice “Tontine” gift for the “Last man or women standing”in our class out of 59 graduates.” I also have the question: … How long would the contents in this bottle last and be palatable? Well wishes and keeep on having fun in life.
I would like to know what the going price would be for a sealed and unopened bottle of seagram’s crown royal, 1957, 80 proof, and also for canadian club, 1950, sealed/unopened
thank you.

A friend of mine has a bottle of schenley ofc whiskey.
It was bottled in 1954 aged 8 years prior to that.

It’s in the original bottle and is still sealed.

I found an old bottle of Canadian Mist whiskey (80 proof) in my 90 year old neighbor’s home. The bottle has not been opened. imprinted on the bottom of the bottle is a set of numbers, then there’s a 9 (Seal or emble) then the number 77. There is also a 3 by itself on the bottom of the bottle. Would you tell me what it’s worth? Thanks Linda
