Cholera Bitters

by :: [Bitters]

This recipe makes a "Stomach Bitters" essence which was obviously thought to aid people afflicted with cholera. Having a case of cholera is unpleasant and has many nasty side effects which results in severe dehydration. It is very unlikely that this recipe would help.

Cholera Bitters Recipe:

Cinnamon Bark
1 oz
Angelica Root
2 oz
Gentian Root
3 oz
Zedoary Root
4 oz
Centaury Herb
4 oz
Galanga Root
4 oz
Buckbean Leaves
4 oz
Peppermint Leaves
6 oz
Bitter Orange Fruit
12 oz
Alcohol (40%)
4 pints
Brandy
3 oz

Instructions

Combine the ingredients in a mortar and grind to a coarse powder and then pack in a percolator, or other suitable maceration vessel. Pass the alcohol through the percolator over a period of 48 hours to create the Cholera Bitters stock essence. If macerating, allow the mixture to macerate for 2 days with occasional agitation, then filter and reserve the liquid.

To make the Cholera Stomach Bitters from the above essence, take 1 oz of essence and combine it with 5 pints of 25% alcohol.
